Instructor: Annette Fiddler
WELCOME TO MRS. FIDDLER'S COUNSELING PAGE
Welcome to my guidance page!   For school year 2011-2012, I will be working with grades 2, 3, and 4, plus  Mrs. Jarrells' fifth graders, Miss Mangano's first graders, and Mrs. Vafiadis' and Mrs. Spicer's kindergarten students.  So this year, I am enjoying helping students in all grade levels have a successful school experience.

The guidance program consists of individual and group counseling, classroom lessons, conferences with parents, and consulting with teachers.    I also refer students and parents to other sources of help, both here at school and in the community.

A counselor can help with a number of student and parent concerns, and information received from students and parents is confidential.   Many issues  can impact student achievement, such as separation and divorce, blended families,  financial concerns, illness or death.   Other issues may include illness, death, moving, deployment, anger, conflict within the home, with school authorities or with peers, or bullying.

In fact, the prevention of bullying is a crucial school focus.  During my classroom lessons, I emphasize that students are responsible for reporting any bullying they see.  Students have the right to come to school without fear, and we discuss how they can insure that our school remains bully free.    Bullying is always a discipline issue; it is prohibited in the Rocky Run Code of Conduct, and students are never expected to handle bullying by themselves.  Additionally, parents are strongly encouraged to give me a call if they fear that their child may be experiencing bullying.

Other topics for classroom guidance include accepting responsibility, thinking about careers, being a friend, settling  conflicts, and organizing one's time and spaces for maximum academic effectiveness.

Students can refer themselves for an individual counseling session by writing a note and putting it in the basket outside my door.  Teachers and parents are also sources of referral when they are particularly concerned about a student.  Further, I welcome students to join me for lunch; so students can invite themselves for a lunch "date" any time I am free to be with them.

In addition, I welcome calls from parents.  Please keep us informed of any major changes that may impact on the family so that we can be a support for your child.  Also, I can help when parents need assistance in providing crucial school supplies for their children.

Now that school has started, please encourage your child to read, stay active, and to limit his or her "screen" time.  Additionally, our community has many programs that can develop your child's interests and provide valuable interaction with other children.  Some organizations that come to mind are the YMCA (www.family-ymca.org) and our own public library  (www.librarypoint.org).

Finally, we need additional mentors for students at Rocky Run!  Mentors come to school one day each week to eat lunch with their student, to visit and to share ideas and accomplishments.  This program is sponsored by Rappahannock Big Brothers Big Sisters right here in Fredericksburg.  With a minimal time commitment,  you can make a huge difference in the life of a child.  Please call me at 540 286-1956 to volunteer to become a special person for someone here at Rocky Run!

I'm looking forward to hearing from you!

Changing Families
Changing Families is a group which helps students with the issues typical of separation and divorce.  These may include custody; visitation; possible change of residence; varying rules, standards of behavior, and schedules; perhaps a new partner for mom or dad, and even stepparents and stepsiblings.

With an emphasis on confidentiality, this group provides a safe place where youngsters  can realize that others their age are going through the same types of experiences.  Thus, they may feel less isolated and gather strength from being able to learn from the group.

Healthy Choices
In our Healthy Choices Group, The Healthy Choices Group has been learning about the Food Pyramid.  Students examine which foods, in which amounts, comprise a healthful diet, which foods should be limited, and which foods need to be avoided altogether.  Students  learn to read labels for the Ingredients List and the Nutrition Facts.  Equally important, they look at the role of physical activity in maintaining health and discuss several easy, enjoyable ways to be active each day.  Students may ask questions, offer comments, and encouraged to apply this information in their daily lives.
New Student Group
Our New Student Group has been considering the benefits of their new school, while at the same time acknowledging the differences and discovering ways to cope with the many transitions.  Though we realize that change can be difficult, still we look at the advantages of learning a new area, with new people and new opportunities.  In group, students may bring up questions, voice concerns, make complaints, or offer suggestions.  In the group, students learn that they are not alone.
Anger Management Group
In this group, we are learning to pinpoint the signs our body gives us that we are angry.  We are also looking at productive ways to deal with that anger, as well as examining the consequences of uncontrolled rage.  The counselor keeps updated with the teacher on each child's progress, and may provide some extra-group coaching as needed.

Safety Patrol
This year our Safety Patrol will be on duty helping students to use their very best behavior in Rocky Run hallways.  Selected by their teachers, these students are volunteers working to keep our halls safe for everyone.

These students take their responsibility seriously.  They are trained and held to high standards themselves.  Safety Patrol memebers  meet at least once a month to discuss schedules, concerns, and any possible changes needed.

Please greet our Safety Patrol members when you see them and thank them for doing a great job for Rocky Run!
